Bohemian Rhapsody – From “Paki” To Legend

So, which one of you knew that Freddy was actually an immigrant in England who was born under the name Farrokh Bulsara? My mom, who grew up listening to Queen and even named our first dog as Freddy, also did not know that he was born in Zanzibar… Shame on her!

Synopsis

Freddy always knew he was not supposed to be an airport worker for the rest of his life. When he finds an opening in a local band, he rises to the challenge and manages to be a part of it as a lead singer, in a time where Rock is emerging and evolving.

As time passes by and Queen reaches new heights, the group struggles to find inspiration to write new songs and reinvent themselves with each set of songs, while dealing with the eccentricities of their lead singer, as he revolves around sex, drugs and his continual search for approval, inspiration and love.

Analysis

As you’re probably aware, if you follow my reviews or even by doing a quick search on the blog, you know that I don’t usually review this kind of movies. Since my mother is quite a fan of the band, I went with her to watch the origins of Freddy Mercury and how the rock band, Queen, made it to the top.

If it is a fact or not, it was amazing to watch how Freddy always felt like he had a reason to go where he was supposed to go with his musical career. His peculiar taste to stand out, be it in his behavior or sense of fashion. The different styles of music added to the main Rock theme as they marvel the world with each new song. It was all splendid, and at least I’ve become acquainted with how they come up with some songs and how the group as a whole wrote them. I thought only Freddy wrote them, but it seems the whole band had ideas for the music they would later play.

However, not everything happens through complete harmony. And more often than not, Freddy was at odds with the rest of the band due to his eccentric nature. Not to mention the times where the band as a whole argued about musical preference with the publishers and which direction they wanted to go as a band.

While the movie itself does not present a level of exciment about the plot, it does come close with how I expected a Rock band in the 70s to behave. The similarities between the actors of the band and the real deal is almost close to perfection! I must mention however, that the energy displayed while Freddy was on stage was of an exquisite and contagious nature! Much more than a singer and a creator, Freddy was also a great performer.

Homosexuality is also a big theme of the movie as it poses the hardships of being gay in such a time even to a great and famous singer like Freddy Mercury, although he mentioned that he was actually bisexual, he spent his last years with a male lover.

I must say it though, I found it quite funny to see Little Finger as Little Finger in the movie, playing the treacherous guy I’ve become acquainted to watch in some famous TV show… You go Little Finger! I still love you!

TL;DR

Bohemian Rhapsody brings you Queen and Freedy Mercury in a perspective never before shown, and while you’re not particularly expecting something exciting and surprising to happen, it does still surprise you with the ideas they come up with to continue as a band, be it in the creation of new music or even to keep themselves together.

One thing I’m sure about, once you watch it, you’ll have the urge to listen to their whole discography and you won’t help it but be energized as the music goes through your ears! Definitely worth to watch!
