Belts And Stripes – Keep On Rolling

Hello there guys and welcome back to another trip through the marvelous and exciting world of Jiu-Jitsu!

This month I wasn’t able to train as much I’m used to, mainly due to extra hours in the classes that I’m currently attending. This does not mean, however, that I’ve been slacking…

In this month’s classes, I’ve been struggling with my game since most of my rolls have been with colleagues that are more graduated than me. Actually, now that I think of it, on my last training session, I rolled with two blue belts, a purple and a brown. You can already imagine, even if you don’t practice Jiu-Jitsu, that all I’ve been doing in these rolls was merely surviving… Trying is the most accurate word…

It is not demotivational to me, to roll against more graduated people, but it’s so damn hard to try and apply anything at all and not end up in a more disadvantageous position right after… I feel like I haven’t absorbed a lot of knowledge this month, mainly because I haven’t been able to apply it throughout the rolls.

I’m still having a lot of trouble to sweep and apply anything from within my guard, which is a shame really since I have no difficulties in pulling it. I have a good, strong guard, my legs are good for that, and it does not break at the first attempt, thus giving me some time to try something. Mainly, I go for triangles and arm locks from the guard. Sometimes I go for laced guard, and from there I attempt to spin and aim for an omoplata/shoulder blade or I even attempt the whole thing from closed guard, although I find it more difficult than the previous one.

In the 12th of May, I and some other colleagues will be heading to Mondim de Basto for a tournament being held there. That’s two weeks of training before the tournament, and I have this week free from classes of the formation that I’m currently taking, so it will be great to focus on my Jiu-Jitsu in these next days. I’ll be working on my guard and what to do from there, since I’m way better while playing from above rather than below.

Expect a detailed entry of Belts and Stripes for May, since it will contain my evolution for the month but also a thorough log of my rolls (hopefully in the plural) in this tournament that I’m going to.

This is it for April’s Belts and Stripes. I wish you guys a good week, with lots of rolls and zero injuries!
