YOU. MUST. SEE. THIS. MOVIE.
That’s it. Completely disregard what I wrote down below. Just go see it!
Still here? Great! Because I really don’t want you to leave! I just wanted to emphasize how great Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 is! This film is awesome to the full extent of my awesome-o-meter! From the beginning to the bitter end, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 is a movie that will entertain you for more than two hours with a rollercoaster of emotions. Comedy, action and drama are all carefully divided into this otherworldly movie. I may be wrong but I think this will be the best Marvel movie of 2017.
Now, onto the review itself!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 begins with an interesting scene where the Guardians are protecting some special batteries for an advanced and genetically-engineered race named Sovereign. I don’t know why this race couldn’t do the job itself but ok. It doesn’t matter. We’re then greeted with an awesome action scene of an intergalactic octopus arriving from the sky in order to consume the precious batteries. What’s interesting is that the scene focuses on baby Groot dancing around while his teammates fight off the space beast.
Once the job is done, the Guardians receive a special and surprising reward from Sovereign. Nebula, Gamora’s sister, was somehow captured by the advanced race and then handed to the Guardians, who at first, don’t have any clue of what to do with an assassin bent on killing one of their teammates. If you don’t remember, Nebula wants to kill her sister Gamora, very very badly.
The Guardians then depart the Sovereign system, with a little extra. The special batteries that they defended previously which are worth millions of credits. Special thanks to Rocket who took Drax’s words seriously about stealing the batteries. A battle occurs as Sovereign sends its fleet chasing after the Guardians’ ship. They fend off successfully at first, but then another wave overwhelms then just in time for some mysterious ship to vanquish all those ships in a blink of an eye.
It turns out that who saved them was no one less than Peter Quill’s long-lost father, whose name is Ego. (Go figure later on). After the guardians landed on a planet for repairs, Ego landed his ship next to theirs and presented himself alongside Mantis, a female capable of reading emotions through physical touch but also able to induce some emotions in whoever she touches.
The group is then divided, Quill, Drax, and Gamora travel alongside Ego and Mantis to Ego’s planet (literally) while Rocket, Baby Groot, and Nebula stay behind on the ship while our favorite raccoon fixes the Guardians’ ship. And guess who appears while tracking the Guardians back at the forest world where they previously landed? The Ravagers. They were hired by Sovereign to retrieve their batteries and Yondu is just dying to meet Peter once more. One thing I can tell you, they did not come to talk.
Alright from this point onward I don’t want to write more of the story than what I already did. About the plot, we continue to see developments within several relations in between the characters. The relationship of hate in between Nebula and Gamora and the reason behind it. How love blossoms slowly for Gamora and Quill. Why Ego, Quill’s father, left his mother and even the reason why his mother got cancer. Then we get to know more of Rocket’s temper and behavior while the same can be said for Drax who always expresses what he feels no matter the circumstances.
Everyone’s character is explored a little bit more throughout the movie besides Groot in fact, but Yondu is included on that list. These secondary storylines are very well woven together within the main argument of the film and not for a second did they seem to be out of place or out of context!
I risk saying that this movie is even better than the first one. The comedy is so much more accurate and even in serious situations, it does make sense which only adds more laughter! The action remains top notch and again very well intertwined with some humor as well. While the main argument seems to be somewhat lost by the middle point of the film, we soon begin to understand the direction that it will take. A direction that just like it happened in the first movie, will have a deep impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Earth included but not just it…
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 is a must see but only if you’ve already watched the first one because if not, definitely go watch it before seeing this one! It is a movie that will certainly please all kinds of people with very carefully spread doses of humor, action, and drama without a single pause in the flow of the plot. GO. WATCH. IT. It is that good!
